Get Your Credit Card Late Charge Waiver in Singapore!

Credit Card Late Charge Waiver

Find out how to get your credit card late charge waiver (or annual fee waiver) in Singapore with our step-by-step guide.

What comes to your mind when you hear credit card fees? It is likely the hated annual/membership fees. We often find it excessive, unexpected and downright unreasonable.

Until recently, I realised that there is a more “money-grabbing” fee – credit card late charge or late fee. It is auto added to your statement one day after missing your credit card bill payment deadline!

How did my late fee on credit card come about?

I always make sure I pay my credit card bills before the deadline. But due to crazy work schedules, I have missed my bill payment, by a day or two, for the past 3 months on my POSB Everyday Card.

When I finally got my life back, I had a rude shock while looking through my statements for the past 3 months. These are what I saw:

  • LATE CHARGES (4 Mar) – S$80.00
  • LATE CHARGES (3 Apr) – S$80.00
  • LATE CHARGES (4 May) – S$100.00

Wow, that’s a whopping S$260.00 in late payment charges!

Get your late charge waiver with a quick phone call

Apart from lamenting about how mercenary the banks are, we can do something about it – call for a waiver!

It is a pretty simple and quick process. Call up your credit card’s customer service line and select a few phone options. And the system will process your waiver.

I managed to get my last late charge of S$100 waived within a minute.

When should you call?

You should call immediately once you realised you have missed the payment deadline.

This will allow the bank to include the late fee reversal in your statement. And this will offset the late charge in the Grand Total amount of your actual statement.

Did your bank refuse to grant you a late charge waiver after you have made a request? Or is there a bank that you wish to see in the list above? Share it with us in the comments below!

  • I have a terrible experience with Citibank Credit Card. I have subscribed Linkedin premium service in January because it was free for the 1st three months. However, I have totally forgotten about the service and didn’t aware that Linkedin has auto debit my card for the monthly fees since April. I was abroad since last year and never use the card since March, hence I didn’t check my account since Feb and not aware of the charges. Not until I’ve lost my card on May then only found out the late payment charges when I call to the customer service center to report the lost card. However, by that time my card has been incurred 2 months late payment charges which is SGD200. I called Citibank service center several times and explain the entire situation to them. However, in the 1st time they reject my request with the reason, “my outstanding payment hasn’t cleared yet”, in fact, I’ve clear the outstanding payment however the payment was paid to the old card (Iwhich I have lost it) and it’s not updated and reflected in the new card. After explaining to the customer service that I’ve paid the payment, the customer service said that he will update the info and help me make another waiver request. After 1 week, I call to Citibank and check the status again. The request got rejected again with the reason “multiple requests have been made”. @@@ .. I’m so speechless and disappointed with the result. Anyone could advise what can I do other than keep on calling the service center and talk to different operators?

  • Citi is terrible now, there is no other way besides the hotline and talk to the same old officers which can’t do anything there. Their waiver system is through their automated phone system and requires 5 working days for a call back or sms. I had waited with no updates, incurring subsequent late charge and finance charge which still they are unable to do anything about it. I’m giving up on citi with the repeating robots over the phone.

  • I have a M1 Visa with Citibank and they refused to waive my late fees. Back in Dec’17 they waived once for me so I thought it would be as easy this time.

    I was wrong.
I tried to request for waiver via phone banking twice and was rejected. Called and was advised to pay the full amount first while the staff put in another request for me, still got declined.

Today I called and was told that a manager rejected my appeal and so they will not be refunding me the late fee of $100. I ask to speak to the manager on duty and was told she cannot access to my request. If she could she would have done so without me asking to speak to her. I asked what have changed? Was it my spending was too low? (Less than $200 monthly by this card as I use my UOB ONE card mainly) but she simply said Citibank needs to stick to no waiver this year?!

I threaten to cancel my card and she just reminded me that she can do so immediately but all my existing rebates/points will be forfeited. I actually like this Citibank card and use it at Starbucks often.

    Super pissed with them.

  • Same experience with Citi Bank. I have requested for waiver 5 times and talked to different robots who could do nothing. In some cases, they don’t even informed me about the request has been rejected. I told them that I don’t want to pay the late charge since it is not very often that I miss the payment. They replied that I will have incurring charges in this case. Worst service ever. I hav even thinking about cancelling all the Citi bank cards.

  • You are a lifesaver!

  • Thank you so much, you saved my day!

  • My citibank card late fee didnt get waive. Out of so many banks, citi got the worse app

  • I didn’t get my late fee waiver too! Apparently I did all the process to pay by transfer through bank mobile app. But I don’t even know the transaction was not made. I have been wanting to terminate citi visa for sometime. So got to do it now. I’m looking at other bank’s credit card.

  • Currently i got charged from UOB credit card for late payment after 7 days i only realised my payment was unsuccesful, the requested for UOB late payment waiver. After 3 days i received a sms from UOB it says Unsuccesful for the fee waiver request. Any advice for this matter ?
